Hollow Cathode Lamps

Hollow cathode lamps (HCLs) are specialized light sources used in atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) to provide element-specific wavelengths for quantitative analysis. These lamps contain a cathode made of the element to be analyzed, which emits characteristic spectral lines when excited by an electrical discharge.

How They Work

When an electrical current passes through the lamp, it creates a glow discharge that excites atoms of the cathode material. These excited atoms emit light at specific wavelengths characteristic of that element, providing the monochromatic light source needed for atomic absorption measurements.

Key Advantages

  • Element Specificity - Precise wavelengths for accurate analysis
  • High Intensity - Strong signal for sensitive detection
  • Long Lifetime - 5,000+ mA hour guarantee
  • Low Noise - < 0.5% RSD for reliable results
